Over one month has passed since it became clear Jalen Ramsey and the Dolphins are looking to part ways. Potential suitors have known about the possibility of a trade for even longer, but the All-Pro corner remains a member of the organization for now.
That is still expected to change shortly, however. Neither finances nor skill are seen as the driving forces for a split between team and player in this case. Rather, tension between Ramsey and head coach Mike McDaniel was reported to have resulted in a mutual decision to move on. The latest comments on the matter from defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver confirm that is the case.
“In this game, things change by the day,” Weaver said (via C. Isaiah Smalls II of the Miami Herald). “I have a tremendous amount of respect [for] Ramsey. He played very good ball for us but relationships are hard. Both sides have mutually chosen to go the other way. I respect that and wish him nothing but the best.”
Ramsey has spent the past two seasons in South Beach, and after a knee injury limited him to 10 games in 2023 he managed a full season last year. The seven-time Pro Bowler is under contract for the next four years as a result of Miami’s willingness to keep him in place through the remainder of his prime, but a reversal of that move should be coming soon. A trade after June 1 rather than before will be more feasible for the Dolphins from a cap perspective, leaving time for an agreement with an interested party to be worked out.
Ramsey hopes to continue his career on a contender, and a reunion with the Rams has been mentioned on multiple occasions as something Los Angeles would welcome. It remains to be seen how much – if any – of the 30-year-old’s outstanding guarantees the Dolphins are prepared to absorb in a trade, something which will no doubt be a crucial factor in any agreement. The Cowboys could find themselves in the running for a Ramsey acquisition, but that does not appear to be likely at this point.
The Dolphins created one need for a new starting cornerback when they released Kendall Fuller. Moving on from Ramsey will open another first-team vacancy, so it comes as no surprise they have shown interest in some of the top remaining free agents at the position. Miami has been in contact with Asante Samuel Jr., while an offer has already been made to Rasul Douglas. James Bradberry could be an outside option, although expectations would be limited in his case if he signs anywhere for 2025.
Miami’s in-house corners will also be counted on to develop this season with multiple starters no longer in the fold; Cam Smith in particular could be in store for an uptick in workload. Plenty of uncertainty looms over how the Dolphins’ secondary will take shape this season, although it remains a foregone conclusion in the team’s view that Ramsey will not suit up for them again.
He knows that the Dolphins aren’t winning anything with McDaniel at HC. He’s like those basketball coaches who don’t emphasize defense. Only place Fangio has worked that his defense sucked. You have to ask yourself why because it wasn’t personnel. He’s done more with less than the Dolphins had on paper going into 2023.
Won’t be surprised to see MacDaniels get fired soon. He isn’t an NFL HC. Better off as an OC. His teams have finesse and schemes, but once they get punched in the mouth, its over. Teams reflect the HCs personality. Miami is too soft. Sounds like that locker room is toxic too, especially with Hill acting like a toddler.
Ramsey may be good, but he talks his way off teams non-stop. I wouldn’t want that headache in my locker room.
What teams has he talked his way off of? The Rams only traded him because of their cap situation and are in the mix now to get him back. Tom Coughlin was the one who ran him out of Jacksonville. Everyone that was part of that team said that was his call. He played out his rookie deal and got traded.
Shad offered, on tv, to make him the highest paid CB at that time. The following week, his back was still ‘sore’ & sat out the game.
So are you questioning if he was hurt? No one in the locker room did or have since then. Everyone said Coughlin didn’t want him there, and that’s where the split came. We can take a look back at his stats that year. His play was still elite despite the contract impasse, so he didn’t dog it.
I didn’t question if he was hurt, 3 doctors did.

Ramsey was cleared by 3 doctors and still sat out. Punk move.
Also, you act like team doctors are impeccable. Team doctors cleared RG III too. How’d that work out? I think he knows his body, and his teammates didn’t question him. I just know this guy’s character going back to college, and he was always a team-first guy who is elite on the field.
Both of us weren’t there. But 3 NFL & NLFPA approved doctors said ‘he’s good’. Hard to question that. No different than the player that has the bad hammy during a contract dispute.
So his teammates were, and how do you clear a back injury anyway? Only person on that Jaguar team that had a problem with him was Coughlin.
We weren’t there. But I have a hard time discrediting 3 doctors saying he’s fine.
As for Tom, he may have been a pain, but he’s also a 2x SB HC and will be in Canton.
Dealing for Ramsey today, he’s older, slower, and still an egotistical manic. Not worth the locker room headache.
NFL team doctors work for the NFL and are paid to get the product on the field as much as possible without getting sued.
You believe that the NFLPA has zero say on the team’s medical doctors? What a joke! Thanks for the laugh!!!
It’s ok little guy, you’ll figure out capitalism when you grow up.
Yeah, like the NFLPA doesn’t know that? $60m for average QB’s for starters.
What if the Raiders pull off a shocker trade for Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey? Combo deal for a first and third next year and someone like TE Mayer?
Jeanty and Bech are looking like the real deal. Darien Porter is looking like a sleeper starter at corner, add Ramsey on the other side and bring in Hill, and all of a sudden you have Hill, Jakobi, Bech, Bowers and Jeanty….formidable. They have $36M in cap space and could probably pull this off with a little contract maneuvering.
I’d think Raiders are looking to build the roster with young players, not waste cap space on old vets. Who wants Hill anyways? He’s a clubhouse cancer
Who wants one of the best WR in the league that PM and Kelce both tried to convince KC to just pay him (at a discount by the way to keep)? Geno is going younger. Hill is still one of the biggest threats in the game and opens up the entire field for everyone in an offense. The cap room is there. Go use it. It’s a two year deal. Get two good years out of him and be a threat. You know he would want to ball out against that AFC West division again.
He’s a great player when he isn’t hitting his girlfriend or random people, getting arrested, or storming out of the game throwing temper tantrums. He’s an expensive depreciating asset and not many HCs want him around younger players as a bad influence.
Not Hill. I could see that being a spot for Ramsey though. He fits the Carroll defense perfectly. I still think the Rams will get that done because corner is their one real weakness aside from their offensive line depth.
Carroll knows how to handle big personalities about as well as any coach in the league ever has.
I think it’d be a good idea for LVR. I could see them as a playoff team if they were able to add both. However, the only way I see MIA trading both (in one deal or even separate deals) is if they are willing to go into a rebuild. Without either of those players I do not see them being very competitive. So they might as well sell off other pieces too and go into a rebuild. I just don’t know if they are willing to go to that stage just yet though.
The Dolphins again hold the crown as the NFLs Happy Campers team (see link) so clearly they don’t want any players around that won’t get with their program. Perhaps their program should include winning playoff games since it’s been 25 years since they’ve done that.

People on here love to rag on McDaniel, but he’s a very good offensive coach and Weaver did a very good job with that defense last year (and people have long loved him–he’ll be a head coach one day). It’s Chris Grier that’s let the team down. They went all-in for 2023, dealt out way too many draft picks and big contracts (the Bradley Chubb trade and contract combination was malpractice). Now they have a bad line, aging stars, and not nearly enough rookie contract talent. Grier’s job security is wild to me.
I’m thinking it will probably take an ownership change to get the Dolphins reset and relevant again. Ross is 85 so he Kraft and Jerry Jones probably don’t have a lot of sunsets in their future.
McDaniel and Grier will be gone after 2025. I hope they acquire plenty of draft picks for the next GM/HC.
He nothing but cancer for a team, let him dig ditches for a living
